Appointments

"Always remember, you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, smarter than you think, and twice as beautiful as you'd ever imagine."

Prenatal Visits

That's the quote that greeted me on the wall of the office of my chosen OB/GYN. I don't know why but it filled me with confidence and settled the nerves of my first appointment. The questions of "Is my baby healthy?" "Is he/she growing like he/she should?"  "Is it going to hurt?" were stilled.

The office was comfortable, the employees smiling and welcoming, the atmosphere evoked peace and wellness. We made the right choice.

I didn't think we'd see anything today; I knew not everyone got an ultrasound on the first appointment. But we did! Our little sweet pea was there! And we heard the strong, healthy heartbeat! And we saw his/her little heart thumping! Amazing. There are no words.

After our appointment, we went over the Cap Wellness Center which works in conjunction with Dr. Cap for a little orientation. We were given a one-on-one consultation with the concierge there who was so pleasant and friendly. It was so informative and we had some practical things to do and classes to sign up for as we were encouraged to start making decisions about how we wanted our birth to go. I felt so much better about birth in general after that short conversation. Less fearful. I even got a little teary about the thought of having a beautiful birth. :)

One of the really important things that was said to me was that we want to look at wellness for the whole body during this time, and that we want to fill our minds with positive things. We were told to stay away from crappy TV and horror story blog posts, to politely decline to listen to peoples' negative opinions about what choices we make because all of this has nothing to do with them. This is about our baby and how we can bring this little one into the world in a way that is positive and loving and beautiful.

So we've signed up for our orientation to meet all the wellness center and doctoral staff, enrolled in an info night about the type of birthing class we chose, and signed up for birthing classes in April. I also bought some positive-minded, childbirth books, and we are going to start making decisions about how we want our birth to go and what we're looking for in a doula. We're off and running! Baby Helms, here you come!
