Fighting Sickness with Essential Oils

Tabitha Helms

Flu season is upon us. I dread the very mention of it. For some reason, I always associate it with December, but every year I seem to have students that start getting sick in January. On Tuesday I had a student absent who returned the next day to tell me, "Miss Neal, I wasn't here yesterday because I threw up." A voice inside my head was screaming, "Then why are you here today!?" I got on my little soapbox and added a link on my teacher website to an article on that discusses how long a child should stay at home after getting LEAST 48 hours people!! Just because the symptoms stop does not mean the contagiousness does. (Excuse me for my minor rant.)

In this blog post, I will discuss my essential oil remedies for a sore throatnasal congestionallergiesgeneral sicknesscold, and fever

I also took some time to read a great Science Spin magazine about germs with my students, and we discussed what we can do when we are sick to keep others from getting it and what we can do when we are healthy to prevent sickness. I used that time to explain to my students that I had On Guard essential oil in my diffuser that I use to keep them healthy and give their bodies some extra fighting power against the germs getting inside of them. I told them about how I clean their tables every day with Protective Blend disinfectant spray. They were so cute and said, "Miss Neal, I feel better already because you did that!" They looooove my diffuser. Whenever I fill it up and start it again during the day, many of them crowd around it to smell what I put in there. You can read more about how I use essential oils in my classroom here.

This week my mister came down with a sore throat and congested head. It was not pretty. He went to bed that night and slept for 13 hours straight. Lucky for him, his mom texted me some essential oil tips that night to get him back into shape.

Here's what we did:

Sore Throat

For sore throat:

First up was a hot shower. I then put 5 drops of Melaluca on his spine and the residue from my hands went on his feet. I put Protective Blend in his diffuser and on his feet.

For nasal congestion:
Respiratory Blend on his pillow and had him inhale some from the bottle.

For allergy symptoms:
Fill a capsule with 2 drops each of LavenderPeppermint, and Lemon. Fill the rest of the way with carrier oil. I used olive oil so I could make some extra ahead of time for him to continue taking later through the week as needed if I wasn't there. (**Note: We didn't have empty capsules that night, so I substituted drinking the allergy capsule mixture in 4oz of water, and diffused the allergy oils as well.)

All this was followed by 13 hours of sleep and calling in sick to work the next day to ensure he got proper rest. A lot of times our bodies get sick to give us a good wake up call that we've tired our poor system out, and it needs rest. My busiest time of the school year is Christmas, and I almost always get physically sick from running myself ragged. It's really important to not just assume the oils are going to work on their own. They're amazing, no doubt, but they need to be combined with proper rest.

The next day I made him some fabulous Chicken and Roasted Vegetable Soup and doctored him up some more of the same thing as yesterday, except this time I added some items I didn't have on hand the day before.

For general sickness:
Protective Blend+ capsules, as well as the Lifelong Vitality pack of vitamins were a great addition, which had unfortunately been at my house the day before. If I had had them on hand, I would have given these to him yesterday. (Another reason I'm looking forward to being his wife and sharing a home with him--everything we need will be all in one place!) I took both those things as well to make sure my immune system was okay after being exposed to his illness. I also brought empty capsules to make some allergy pills so he wouldn't have to take them in water. I also made some 1,2,3,4 capsules, which are INCREDIBLE when you feel yourself just starting to get sick.

1,2,3,4 Capsules for colds:
1 drop Frankincense, 2 drops Oregano, 3 drops Protective Blend, and 4 drops Peppermint. Fill the rest of the way with oil. (Again, I use olive oil so I can make and store them ahead of time.)
Take 1 capsule every four hours (NO EXCEPTIONS!) when you feel a cold coming on.

I made some extras of these for him and for myself. Sure enough, I felt a sore throat coming on a couple days later. I immediately took Protective Blend+, Lifelong Vitality, a 1,2,3,4 capsule (every four hours), and put Melaluca on my spine and Protective Blend in my diffuser. I had a headache when I woke up and a little sore throat and felt very warm on my forehead after the work day was over. I continued taking my 1,2,3,4 capsules throughout the day and took a nap when I got home from work.

For fever symptoms:
I put Peppermint on my feet and the back of my neck when I started feeling feverish.

I woke up the next day feeling 100% better--no joke! I was shocked it was gone so fast and that I didn't have any lingering symptoms that day. I did sing at church and threw my voice out a bit, so the sore throat has been coming off and on, but the headache and fever were gone within ONE DAY! Pretty amazing if you ask me. ;)

Being sick is no fun, but it is bound to happen to the best of us, and it is a lot easier to manage when we have the right tools to use. I love that I don't have to rely on over the counter medication to tame the symptoms without making me better. I can use God-given, natural remedies to aid my body in the healing process.
